Commonly Asked Questions

I’m supposed to appear within three days of sentencing. What do I do?
If you are on formal probation, you must report within three days. Otherwise, come in person allowing yourself enough time to complete your hours. Bring your court papers. Bring the fee in exact cash or money order. If it’s your first time, arrive before noon or an hour before closing.

Do I need to bring my court papers?
Yes, we need your paperwork to proceed with the interview.

Can I arrange my service over the phone?
No, you must appear in person.

Can I send someone else to sign up for me?
No, you must appear in person. If you are under 18 years of age, you must bring a parent or guardian with you.

Do I have to pay a fee?
Yes, please see the fee section of this page for amounts. Please bring exact cash or a money order at the time of registration.  You may pay with your debit card and a $1.50 charge will apply.

Can I get the fee waived or pay in installments?
As of February 2010 the courts can no longer waive a defendant’s fees only CRP has the authority to waive fees, offer fee reductions and/or payments plans through a financial assistance application process to determine a defendant’s financial ability to pay program fees. Inquire about the application and process at one of our 4 office locations.

Why do I have to pay a fee to the center to do my hours?
During sentencing, you chose the option of completing community service instead of paying a fine or going to jail. The fee offsets the cost of processing your case at the Volunteer Center. It covers the time for the interview, monitoring, follow-up, and reporting back to the courts. The Volunteer Center is not compensated by the justice center for these services.

Can I pick the place that I will go to complete my hours?
You will meet with an interviewer who will work with you to determine what placement will best suit your needs based on the court orders and other restrictions.

Can you give me an extension (more time) to complete my service/hours?
No, permission to extend the court deadline is only given by the court BUT we can help. Return to our office and ask for a progress report. Take that report to the court to request an extension.

Can I transfer and do my service someplace else?
YES. If you would like to do that without coming to the office, please mail us a clear copy of your court order with the following:
1. A stamped, self-addressed envelope.
2. A letter indicating the city/state you want to be transferred to.
3. Your current daytime contact phone number.
4. A money order of $50 made payable to: Volunteer Center Orange County

I finished my hours. What do I do?
Report in person or have someone else bring your completed time sheet to the CRP office where you registered (do not fax or mail).

I need to be reassigned to different work. What do I do?
Come in person to our office. Bring $10 cash or money order for the reassignment fee.
